THE DIVINE PHUGTAL

03:43

The valley of Ladakh holds many a secrets from the world, some enthralling, some mystique and some divine.

Hidden amongst the abode of the beautiful mountains and caves of Lungnak valley in south-eastern Zanskar is a secluded stone emerged Buddhist monastery and the only one at that which can be reached on foot in India.

The Phuktal/Phugtal Gompa (monastery) owes its legacy to capable and famous researchers and educators who dwelled in the cavern, around which the religious community has been manufactured, and has for long been a spot for retreat, contemplation, learning, and instructing. This is reflected in its name Phuktal, which is gotten from Phukthal, made up of Phuk signifying 'cave', and Tal or Thal signifying 'at recreation' in the imperiled Zangskari lingo of the Tibetan dialects. A substitute spelling of Phuktal is Phukthar, where Thar signifies 'liberation'. Thus, the name Phuktal signifies 'the cave of recreation' or 'the cave of liberation'.

The monastery has four prayer rooms, a library, teaching facilities, a kitchen, guest rooms and living quarters for approximately 70 monks in residence. Frescoes and ceiling decorate the old chapel and are popular with tourists.

The way to Phugtal is a long trek and one reaches from Padum to Raru first via cab or transport and from then on the trek begins from the village of Purne.

The trek to Phugtal is one amazing experience which incorporates the divine experience and the solitude and enchanting vibes of the monastery!
