LONAR CRATER : THE ONLY SALT-SALINE LAKE IN THEWORLD!

The world is full of mysteries and things unknown to us! We claim to have discovered many of it but undeniable is the fact that we are not eve close to discovering the stupendous reality of this earth
A live example of it is the Lonar Crater in the Buldana District of Maharashtra. Unique in its origin the lake is the only saline soda lake which was created by a meteor impact at an estimated speed of 90,000kmph, weighing 2 million tones some 52,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch and it is the only hyper velocity impact crater in basaltic rock anywhere on earth.
And yet, for all of its rareness, surprisingly few have heard of Lonar Lake apart from locals and occasional trekkers. Lonar Lake has intrigued NASA researchers and authorities from the Geological Survey of India to endeavor into the peripherals of the once neglected lake and question various anomalies like Why is the lake alkaline and saline at the same time? Why does it support micro-organisms rarely found elsewhere on Earth? Why do compasses fail to work in certain parts of the crater?And also of What lurks at its bottom?
The Lonar lake is itself a majestic sight for photographers and birdwatchers as its home to many migratory and local birds such as shelduck, black-winged stilts, brahminy ducks, red-wattled lapwings, blue jays e.t.c with its amazing and scenic views.
Also, a place of religious importance to many who have related the lakes origin to religion and mythology, the lake has various temples flanking it, each with a story and folklore of its own.
the architecture of these temples is remarkable and so are the stories that guard their virtue and heed their importance
The most significant temple, however, sits in the town. The Daitya Sudan temple is committed to Lord Vishnu, slayer of the evil spirit Lonasura. Local people assert that the pit was the evil spirit's sanctum and that the lake's dim water results from its spilled blood. The sanctuary itself is reminiscent of Khajuraho, with sensual figures of having sex couples and assaulting brutes.
Lonar has to offer more, for enthusiasts and trekkers the lake and its surroundings are a great place to trek and enjoy a day out. The way to the lake is challenging enough and for the adventure seekers its a mild warm up they can tread into for sure!
