BREAKING STEREOTYPES

09:11

There has been a shift in the Indian society about all the so called traditions........thinking has changed, efforts are being made to overthrow the wrongs and pave way for a better future, a recent example of this is the Holi celebrations in the holy city of Varanasi with the widows who have been a dominant part of the city's culture and society.

Cliches dusted aside, and age old traditions broken for a better and brighter future. A confident stride into tomorrow was what the city of Varanasi witnessed when thousands of widows from Vrindavan and the holy city itself played Holi and rejoiced amidst the colours that were barred by the society from their lives, renewed joy filled the air with the harmonious conch shell beats and the hues of Gulal as the lady's rejoiced in the premises of the Gopinath Temple in Varanasi.

There was palpable excitement as they smeared each other with Gulal, as this was the first time they played Holi in a temple in this town.

Shunned from the society till now and especially during auspicious festivals these widows were finally able to break the stereotype and enjoyed the festival with full vigour and honour.
